Why are there so many horror stories about nursing homes?

There are many misconceptions about nursing homes. Years ago, nursing homes were sterile, hospital-like settings with narrow hallways and small shared rooms where people went to die. But modern nursing homes like ours are just the opposite. Today’s residences are offered dining, a full calendar of social activities, pleasant environments, and some private rooms – and the peace of mind that comes with knowing medical health is just a call-button away.

Is it true that once someone is admitted to a nursing home they never leave?

No, that is not true. Some illnesses or injuries have progressed to the point where both ongoing medical and custodial care may be necessary through the end of life. However, many people encounter a skilled nursing for the first time after a sudden hospitalization, such as from a fall or stroke. After rehabilitative care, the person may be able to return home, or consider an independent living community or assisted living.

Can couples live together?

Yes, couples can live together. Skilled nursing and long term care residences have options for couples to live in the same residence, while each receives the care they need. Get more information on couples living together from our admissions director.

When is it time to consider a nursing home for your loved one?

•Both medical and personal care needs have become too great to handle at home or in another senior living community. This may be due to a recent hospitalization, or a chronic illness which has gradually been worsening.
•Your parent needs a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but it’s anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time.

What happens if an elder has an emergency and what safety measures are in place?

One of several reasons people decide that elders with chronic health problems are better off in a nursing home than in their own homes is safety. The obvious point of safety in nursing homes has always been that there are trained professionals on the spot in case of a fall, medication reaction or other health issue. However, with advances in technology, nursing homes have advanced in safety measures over and above what they once provided. There is also staff and trained personal available 24 hours a day to handle emergency situations. Skilled nursing facilities have arrangements with local hospitals and health care professionals for assistance with emergencies.

How will I be treated at the MS Care Center?

What exactly is skilled nursing?

Skilled nursing homes are residences designed to house and assist individuals who have health conditions. Skilled nursing facilities, also known as nursing homes or extended care services, provide meals, activities and health management support for their residents.

What makes Transitional Care different than Long Term Care?

Our Transitional Care provides short term skilled nursing services and rehabilitation for a patient that has had a recent decline in health conditions. Our goal in the TCU is to return you to your optimal potential with as brief a stay as possible. Long Term Care is when a senior adult needs help with daily activities and are not liking to regain the independence one needs to continue living alone. Also, these residents may need a higher level of continuous care which includes a staff of nurses and other medical team members, including physicians.

Are there social activities?

Yes. Skilled nursing residences have a full calendar of activities and social events for residents, including art classes, ice cream socials, bingo and games, prayer service, movies and guest speakers. In addition, we have a beauty parlor and other amenities that make the skilled nursing facility feel more like living at home.

What are the visiting hours?

There are no set visiting hours. It’s just like living at home. You and your guests are free to come and go as you please.

Where are residents served meals, in their room or in the dining room?

Residents have a choice if they would like room service or to eat in the dining room. We encourage them to come to the dining room if possible in order to enjoy the fellowship with the other residents.

How will I meet new people when I move in?

Our residents are friendly people and many are likely to approach you when they notice a new face.  There are lots of activities here and plenty of opportunities to make new friends.

What items can I bring from my home?

Our skilled nursing facility will provide all of the furniture your elderly parent needs in their room. However, to make it feel like home, we encourage residents to bring personal items such as family photos, a familiar bedspread, and treasured knickknacks. If possible, please visit before your family moves in, so you can see the physical layout, sizes of the rooms, amount of closet space and any furniture or household items that are included.

Does MSCC have programs for seniors with Alzheimer’s and other memory issues?

We do provide programs for Alzheimer and Dementia residents within our long term care area. Alzheimer residents are admitted based on their mobility.
